Wearable device market ‘overhyped,’ researcher claims

Many big tech companies are jumping into wearable technology, but there are indications people aren’t all that jazzed about wearing smartwatches, fitness bands and similar gadgets. Technalysis Research analyst Bob O’Donnell says the emerging category has been overhyped and that sales and shipment forecasts have been “unrealistically high.” In a report Wednesday, O’Donnell said he sees a “modest opportunity” for smart wearables in the near term. Only after five years will it grow into a “respectably sized business,” he says. Technalysis is predicting worldwide smart wearable devices shipments this year of 9.9 million units, with revenue of $2.1 billion. In 2018, unit shipments could hit 70.5 million units, with revenue of $11.7 billion, he said. His report includes “wrist-worn” devices like smartwatches, “head-worn” devices like smart glasses and other gadgets worn on the body that generate, display or communicate digital information.
