Chromebook sales are on fire, according to market research firm Gartner (IT). In a report Monday, Gartner said sales of Chromebooks will reach 5.2 million units in 2014, up 79% from 2013. By 2017, Chromebook sales are set to nearly triple, reaching 14.4 million units, Gartner said. A Chromebook is a notebook computer that runs Google ‘s (GOOG) Chrome operating system and mainly uses the Internet cloud for storage. A wireless connection, either Wi-Fi or cellular, is required to access online data and applications. Chromebooks have little local storage, usually solid-state drives with up to 16 gigabytes of storage. “Now that the PC market is no longer growing strongly, vendors are searching for new business opportunities,” Gartner analyst Isabelle Durand said in a statement. “They launched Chromebooks to revive interest in sub-$300 portable PCs once the netbook bubble had burst.” Chromebooks are mainly being driven by the education market in… Scalper1 News
