Despite all the talk about 4K or Ultra HD TV being the next big thing in home entertainment, it’s likely to remain a premium niche market for years to come, according to a new report from research firm TDG. Forecasts for Ultra HD TV have been “overly optimistic,” TDG analyst Joel Espelien said. He doesn’t expect widespread viewing of 4K video content until 2019. Even then, it won’t make up a large percentage of viewing, he said. High prices for 4K a dearth of content and poor consumer awareness will hold back adoption for several years, he says. Plus, Ultra HD is a living-room experience, and the amount of video being watched there is falling as more consumers watch TV on PCs, tablets and smartphones, which don’t need the extra resolution, Espelien says.
