Big-screen TVs, game consoles draw holiday shoppers

Apple iPads weren’t the only hot consumer electronics products bringing in shoppers on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday. Big-screen televisions and video game consoles had buyers in a frenzy at the start of the holiday shopping season. Target (TGT) said Friday that one door-buster item, the 50-inch Element LED HDTV for $229, “sold out in a matter of minutes” at many locations. The television regularly lists for $500. Best Buy (BBY), Target and Wal-Mart used Apple iPad tablets as door-buster sale items late Thursday and Friday, and reports indicate they were a huge hit with holiday shoppers. Wal-Mart (WMT) said Friday that it sold 1.4 million tablets overall on Thanksgiving and noted that the iPad Mini (bundled with a $100 Wal-Mart gift card) was a top seller. Target (TGT) said Friday that the iPad Air was one of its hot items. The retailer offered the new model tablet for $479, which is $20 less than Apple ‘s (AAPL) list price, along with a $100 Target gift card, dropping the effective price to $379. “Early indications are that it may be an iPad holiday season,” Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry said in a research note Friday. Apple (AAPL) is set to have a bang-up holiday selling season, assuming it can make enough iPad tablets to meet demand. Best Buy (BBY), Target (TGT) and Wal-Mart (WMT) are using big promotional deals on Apple’s tablets to get shoppers into stores starting Thanksgiving evening. Target and Wal-Mart are selling the just-released iPad Air for $479, which is $20 less than Apple ‘ s (AAPL)list price. But on Black Friday, Target is giving out $100 Target gift cards when you buy any regular-sized iPad, dropping the effective price for the iPad Air to $379. Meanwhile, Best Buy will offer the iPad Air for $449, a $50 discount over the list price. Of course, the catch is “while supplies last.” Retailers also are offering crazy deals on Apple’s first-generation iPad Mini. On Black Friday, Target is giving $75 gift cards when you buy an iPad Mini, dropping the effective price to $224 for the entry-level model. And Wal-Mart is offering a $100 gift card with the purchase of an iPad Mini at the regular price of $299 on Thursday evening, knocking the price down to $199.
