3D selfies could give consumer 3D printing a lift

Selfies are going 3D. The trend of people taking self portraits with their smartphone cameras is spilling over into consumer 3D printing. Amazon.com (AMZN]) announced Monday that it is offering 3D printing services, including the ability for customers to make personalized bobble-head toys. The full-color cartoon bobble heads are 2.8 inches tall and 1.5 inches wide and deep. They cost $29.99 and are produced by Mixee Labs of Brooklyn, N.Y. The three-day conference starts on Tuesday, but big companies in the industry will be holding media briefings on Monday. Sony (SNE) is leading the current generation of consoles with its PlayStation 4, while Microsoft’s (MSFT) Xbox One and Nintendo’s (NTDOY) Wii U are playing catch-up. A major focus of E3 2014 will be on AAA game titles that can move a lot of units and also help drive console sales. “With solid adoption of the next-gen consoles to date (7 million-plus PS4 units and 5 million-plus Xbox One units sold), we expect a shift in focus at next week’s E3…
