Intel dives further into wearables with Luxottica venture

Intel (INTC) announced Wednesday it will collaborate with eyewear maker Luxottica Group (LUX) to develop smart glasses. It’s one of several recent partnerships that Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel has entered into as it expands into the wearable technology arena. Luxottica Group, based in Milan, Italy, designs, manufactures and distributes fashion, luxury and sports eyewear with brands such as Ray-Ban, Oakley and Persol. Luxottica also makes sunglasses branded Giorgio Armani, Burberry, Stella McCartney, Versace, Vogue and Donna Karan, among others. The two companies in a joint press release said the multiyear alliance will “push the boundaries of research and development to anticipate what smart technology for eyewear will look like in the future.” The first product is expected to launch next year.
