British vacuum cleaner whiz James Dyson aims to take on iRobot

Vacuum cleaner wizard James Dyson has set his sights on outdoing iRobot (IRBT) in the robotic vacuum cleaner market. Dyson has invested $8.2 million in a new robotics laboratory at Imperial College London to develop an affordable Robot to carry out household chores, the British press reported this week. Dyson envisions developing a “new generation of robot that understands the world around them, will be able to clean the house, put out the bins and even keep an eye out for intruders,” he said, according to the Daily Mail . Dyson said the lab “has begun hiring up to 15 scientists who will work on developing robot vision systems that could be used in devices such as robot-controlled vacuums — a longstanding ambition of Dyson himself,” the Guardian reported. Dyson said he is “almost there” in producing an automatic vacuum cleaner with both good navigation skills and good suction, according to the Independent. Dyson’s long-term goal is to make a multipurpose robot that can do household chores, patrol the property for intruders and raise the alarm if there’s a fire, the Telegraph reported. The famed British inventor and designer says he is competing

IRobot home robots drive sales, company stock

Strong sales of Roomba robotic vacuums helped iRobot clean up in the fourth quarter. The Bedford, Mass.-based company reported late Wednesday that its Q4 sales rose 25% year over year to $126.3 million. IRobot earned 11 cents a share, up from a loss of 21 cents in the year-earlier period. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected iRobot to earn 10 cents a share on sales of $125.5 million in the quarter ended Dec. 28. Home robots, including the Roomba, Scooba floor-washing robot and Mirra pool-cleaning robot, powered iRobot ‘s (IRBT) results. Revenue from home robots rose nearly 31% to $108.3 million in Q4 and accounted for 86% of total sales. Domestic sales of home robots jumped 50% to $47.8 million, while international sales climbed 18% to $60.4 million. “Home (robots) continued to do really well and that is the driver of our business for the next couple of years,” iRobot Chief …

IRobot Upgrades Floor-Washing Robot Scooba

LAS VEGAS — After giving its Roomba vacuum-cleaner robot a major upgrade in November, iRobot now has done the same with its Scooba floor-washing robot. Bedford, Mass.-based iRobot took the wraps off its Scooba 450 at the Consumer Electronics Show this week. The new Scooba is up to three times more effective at cleaning floors than previous model Scoobas, iRobot CEO Colin Angle said. “The new Scooba is a complete, blank-sheet-of-paper redesign,” Angle told IBD. “It has triple the cleaning efficacy and massively improved ease of use.” With the Roomba 850 and the Scooba 450, iRobot (IRBT) is “aggressively raising the bar on cleaning,” he said. “Our strategy in an environment where competition is coming is to figure out how to do the job better than anyone else. “From a business standpoint, it’s very important because the older version of Scooba we never felt was at a point where we were …
