Aereo still alive; Supreme Court ruling gave it two lifelines

The U.S. Supreme Court decision last month against Aereo apparently wasn’t the slam dunk that television broadcasters first thought. The high court’s ruling gave Aereo a few options for how it could continue operating legally. Aereo shut down its service, which streamed free, over-the-air TV to subscribers via the Internet, after the June 25 decision to evaluate its options. Aereo delivered live and time-shifted programming from Internet cloud-based DVRs and antennas. It is backed by IAC (IACI), which is run by media mogul Barry Diller. In a 6-3 decision, the justices ruled that Aereo’s business was no different from that of a cable TV provider, despite differences in technology. While IAC grows online dating business, comics crack wise

Online dating has become a big business for companies like IAC (IACI), which owns Match.com, OkCupid and other hook-up services. As the segment has grown in prominence, so too has ridicule of online matchmaking services by comedians. Late Friday, Business Insider reported that IAC was close to acquiring HowAboutWe, a New York-based startup for singles. Meanwhile, IAC’s majority-owned Tinder dating app is making headlines in Brazil, where people are using it to make romantic connections during the World Cup. Quartz reported last week that Tinder had seen a 50% increase in downloads and usage in Brazil since the soccer tournament began in mid-June. While online dating is increasingly commonplace, comedians like to poke fun at the superficiality of some services and how narrow others are.
