Amazon urged to join eBay, HP in spinoff trend

2015 could be the year of the spinoff, with eBay (EBAY), Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) and others spinning off divisions to unlock shareholder value, according to the Edge Consulting Group. E-commerce company eBay plans to spin off its digital payments unit PayPal as a separate public company next year. And HP plans to split into two publicly traded entities. One company will be devoted to servers, software and cloud technology, while the other will focus on HP’s traditional PC and printer businesses. Meanwhile, Symantec (SYMC) plans to split into two companies as well, with one focused on security and another on information management. ServiceNow Seen With More Ability To Beat Rivals

ServiceNow (NOW) will likely continue to grow beyond its core IT service management business, says Goldman Sachs in initiating coverage of the stock with a buy rating. The investment bank sees ServiceNow increasingly competing with companies such as CA Technologies (CA) and Hewlett-Packard (HPQ). Goldman analyst Greg Dunham set a price target of 80 on ServiceNow stock, which was up 1.5% in afternoon trading in the stock market today, near 64.50.

Server Market Shows Recovery, Led By Hewlett-Packard

Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) held the top position in the computer server market in the third quarter with 26.5% share of revenue, followed by IBM (IBM) with 18.2%. Global server sales rose 4.8% to $12.7 billion, as unit shipments rose 5.7% to 2.38 million.
