Verizon could be buyer if Sprint sells spectrum

Verizon Communications (VZ) looms as a buyer if Sprint (S) sells some of its radio spectrum to raise cash for a network upgrade that it badly needs to stay competitive in the U.S. wireless market. “For a company that we expect to burn through another $4.5 billion in cash this calendar year, selling some 2.5 GHz spectrum would certainly provide some level of near-term relief,” said Craig Moffett, an analyst at MoffettNathanson, in a blog post. Verizon and cable TV companies loom as possible buyers of a chunk of Sprint’s spectrum, most of which is in the high frequency of 2.5 gigahertz, says Moffett.
