Apple-only diet proved unwise for Cirrus Logic

When Apple was a go-go stock, component makers liked having a lot of exposure to the company. Now that Apple’s growth has slowed, those same companies want to be more diversified. Among public companies, audio chipmaker Cirrus Logic (CRUS) had the greatest exposure to Apple (AAPL). On Tuesday, Cirrus took a step to diversify its customer base by agreeing to acquire Wolfson Microelectronics. Austin, Texas-based Cirrus will purchase Wolfson for about $467 million in cash. The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2014. Wolfson is headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland. “This acquisition strengthens Cirrus Logic’s core business as a leader in audio signal processing components, enhances our ability to differentiate our products with software, and adds new product categories such as MEMS microphones to our portfolio, ” Cirrus CEO Jason Rhode said in a statement. Apple iPad Mini 2 winners include Cirrus Logic, STMicro

Apple’s (AAPL) second-generation iPad Mini tablet was made available for purchase Tuesday and analysts already are tearing it open to see which component makers scored a place in it. Device repair website IFixIt took apart an iPad Mini with Retina display and found many familiar component suppliers represented inside. Two component winners were audio-codec provider Cirrus Logic (CRUS) and motion-sensor provider STMicroelectronics (STM). They have faced heightened competition for that business. Like the larger-screen iPad Air, released on Nov. 1, the iPad Mini 2 features a display from LG Display (LPL), IFixIt said. Reports have speculated that the new iPad Mini will be in short supply because of difficulties in sourcing the 7.9-inch high-resolution display. Sharp and Samsung also are supplying displays for the iPad Mini 2, MacRumors reported. The display is run by an LCD driver from Parade Technologies and power supply chips from Texas Instruments (TXN). It…
