CBS adding Showtime, CBS News online video channels

CBS is going all out with its Internet television plans. The media company announced late Wednesday that it plans to offer its Showtime premium channel as an online subscription service and CBS News as an advertising-supported online channel. CBS (CBS) Chief Executive Officer Les Moonves made the announcements during the company’s third-quarter earnings conference call. The Showtime over-the-top (OTT) video channel would premiere sometime in 2015, he said. The CBS News online channel called CBSN launched Thursday. CBSN is the first streaming news channel on the OTT TV market. The network is available 24/7 and features live, anchored coverage 15 hours each weekday (from 9 a.m. to midnight Eastern time). Lions Gate hopes streaming video odds are ever in its favor

Lions Gate Entertainment (LGF), the studio behind the “Hunger Games” movies, has jumped on the direct-to-consumer streaming video bandwagon. Lions Gate announced Monday that it has partnered with Tribeca Enterprises to launch a subscription video-on-demand service called Tribeca Short List. Launching in the first half of 2015, the service will offer “a prestigious selection of Lions Gate and Tribeca titles as well as critically acclaimed films drawn from around the world,” the companies said in a press release. The news follows announcements last week of over-the-top Internet video services from CBS (CBS) and Time Warner’s (TWX) HBO. Some analysts said that the moves could mark the beginning of unbundling cable-TV programming.
