Lenovo, HP leaving other PC vendors in the dust

L enovo and Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), the top two sellers of personal computers worldwide, were the only major PC vendors to increase their PC shipments year over year in the first quarter. Overall PC shipments fell more than 5% vs. Q1 2014, market researchers Gartner and IDC reported late Thursday. Gartner put the decline at 5.2%, while IDC said shipments fell 6.7%. Q1 shipments of 68.5 million PCs in the first quarter marked the lowest recorded volume since Q1 2009, IDC said. PC shipments faced multiple headwinds last quarter, including an inventory buildup of low-cost Windows Bing-based notebooks and a slowdown in commercial buying after the Windows XP refresh cycle. PC sales likely will get a boost this summer from the release of Microsoft’s (MSFT) Windows 10 operating system, IDC analyst Rajani Singh said in a statement.
