Within a meshed-off area at NASA’s drone convention in late July at the Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley, a University of Michigan research team was demonstrating geofencing — a technology that aims to put up virtual walls that drones cannot fly through. But in the middle of the demo a gust of wind hit the test drone, sending it careening through the invisible geofence into the mesh a few feet away. Several of the drone’s rotors snagged.
