Don’t fear the fog, Cisco and IBM insist

You’ve heard of the cloud. Now brace yourself for “the fog”! First came cloud computing, where people access computer resources, software applications and data — stored in remote server farms — over the Internet. Now tech industry insiders have coined the term “fog computing” to address the “Internet of Things,” a dispersed network of sensors and smart devices. “Fog computing could be the next evolution of cloud computing,” UBS analyst Steven Milunovich said in a report Thursday. “Currently, the pendulum is swinging toward centralized cloud computing. However, the next big trend looks like the Internet of Things, which may require a decentralized infrastructure based on edge or fog computing.” Milunovich says that Cisco Systems (CSCO) defines fog computing as “a highly virtualized platform, typically located at the network’s edge, that provides computer, storage and networking services between end devices and traditional cloud computing data centers.” The Internet of Things promises to bring… Scalper1 News
