Video game sales at U.S. retail stores rose for the eighth consecutive month on a year-over-year basis in September, driven by next-generation consoles and the hit game “Destiny.” Retail tracker NPD Group reported late Thursday that sales of new video game hardware, software and accessories at U.S. retail stores climbed 2% to $1.1 billion. Sales of new video game products at brick-and-mortar stores represent about half of total consumer spending on video games, with the rest coming from used game sales and rentals and digital-format sales, downloads and subscriptions.
