More than half of the gear running corporate networks is old or obsolete, as companies put off upgrades to save money and evaluate new technologies like cloud computing and software-defined networks. The percentage of networking equipment that is aging or obsolete is 51% worldwide, its highest level in at least six years, according to an annual study by Dimension Data, a global information and communications technology service provider. The figure was 48% last year and 45% in 2012. Dimension Data defines aging devices as those that have been announced by the vendor as being past end-of-sale, but have not yet passed end-of-support.
