Carmakers roll over gadget firms to steal spotlight at CES

LAS VEGAS — Automakers drove into Las Vegas this week and stole the buzz at the Consumer Electronics Show with new technologies that promise to make cars safer, more energy efficient and more fun. Ford (F), General Motors (GM) unit Chevrolet, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota and Volkswagen were among the major car companies holding press events or giving keynote speeches at the 2015 International CES. It was the biggest presence ever of car companies at the annual gadget show. Toyota (TM) on Monday doubled down on its hydrogen fuel-cell car initiative by making its patent portfolio royalty free to other companies through 2020 to spur development of the alternative fuel cars and the infrastructure to support them. Tesla Motors (TSLA) took a similar tack with its electric car patent portfolio last June.
