Apple Watch interest described as ‘tepid,’ ‘lackluster’

Apple Watch interest is “tepid,” claims a new report by UBS Securities, which also slashed its sales outlook for the device. A study of global Internet search activity showed “lackluster interest” in Apple’s smartwatch when compared with other new consumer electronics launches, UBS analyst Steven Milunovich said in a note Friday. Apple Watch interest is tracking at 20% of the level of iPhone and iPad launches, Milunovich said. He forecasts Apple will ship 11 million watches in fiscal 2015 ending Sept. 26. But he cut his forecast for fiscal 2016 to 31 million watches from 40 million based on waning demand as measured by Internet searches. Milunovich now says 7% rather than 10% of the expected iPhone 5/6 installed base of 430 million is likely to buy an Apple Watch.
