Midway between mobile product launches, Apple (AAPL) has decided to tweak the specifications of its entry-level iPad and midrange iPhone in hopes of boosting sales. Apple on Tuesday discontinued its 3-year-old iPad 2 and replaced it with a new version of its fourth-generation iPad, a tablet family that debuted November 2012 but was discontinued a year later. The new entry-level, full-size iPad comes with 16 gigabytes of data storage and costs $399 or the Wi-Fi only model and $529 for a version with cellular connectivity. For the same price as the iPad 2, consumers will get a tablet with a high-resolution Retina display, a faster processor and better cameras. The new tablet offers “a dramatic upgrade in power, performance and value compared to the iPad 2 it replaces,” Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said in a press release.
