Apple preparing to phase out iPad Mini, Taiwan report says

Apple (AAPL) is planning to phase out the iPad Mini as sales of the small tablet get cannibalized by the company’s new large-screen smartphone, according to a media report out of Taiwan. Citing an unnamed source in the supply chain, Taiwan’s Economic Daily News said Apple will no longer update the 7.9-inch iPad Mini line, meaning the iPad Mini 3 released last month will be final model, Digital Trends reported Tuesday. Digital Trends said EDN has been “hit and miss” on Apple rumors, but is believed to have reliable sources in the local supply chain, which serves Apple’s contract manufacturers. Apple’s new phone-tablet, or phablet, is likely behind the move. The iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5-inch display, big enough for customers who previously used a 4-inch iPhone and an iPad Mini.
