Fewer than 20% of new mobile phone buyers sell or trade in their old phones, according to a new survey which highlights a problem for the emerging used-phone market. A survey of 1,000 recent phone buyers revealed that just 18% sold or traded in their old handset. Apple (AAPL) iPhones received the most resale or trade-in activity, with almost one-third of old iPhones getting cashed in, Consumer Intelligence Research Partners reported Tuesday. Less than 20% of Samsung phones are sent to the used phone market, CIRP says. Other brands saw 10% or less resale or trade-in activity. Most old phones (51%) are kept by their owners, the CIRP survey showed. And 18% are given to family members or friends.
