Apple ekes out market share gain in slowing China phone market

Apple (AAPL) made a big deal about launching its latest iPhones in China on the same date as in the U.S. and other major markets. But Q4 smartphone tallies out Wednesday from IDC show that Apple is still having a tough time gaining share in China, a market that prefers low-cost handsets. Apple’s smartphone market share in mainland China rose to 7% in Q4 from 6% in the third quarter. Apple got a boost from the launch of its high-end iPhone 5S and and midrange iPhone 5C handsets, which debuted on Sept. 20. In years past, new iPhones went on sale in China months after they were launched in the U.S. Apple’s smartphone growth likely was held back by reported supply constraints for the iPhone 5S.
