Microblogging service Twitter has nearly as many former users as it does current users, according to a new study by investment bank Cowen and Company. A survey of 2,000 U.S. online adults earlier this month found that 21.8% are current Twitter users, 19.3% are former Twitter users and 59% have never used the service. Based on the survey results, Cowen analyst John Blackledge estimates that Twitter will add about 2 million net new adult monthly active users in the U.S. in the next 12 months. He previously forecast 4 million new users over that time. “The growth trajectory suggested from the survey is concerning and implies that Twitter may be more of a niche service relatively,” Blackledge said.
