This week, BlackBerry showed off its upcoming Passport phone, which features a 4.5-inch square display, which is designed for better viewing of spreadsheets, architectural drawings, medical X-ray images and other work. It’s expected to be launched in September. The BlackBerry Passport is “the ideal device for reading e-books, viewing documents and browsing the Web. No more worrying about portrait or landscape modes,” a company blog post said Monday. The Passport breaks from the homogeneity of rectangular smartphones with narrow screens, it said. The Passport will offer better readability because it will display 60 characters per line — much closer to the 66 characters typically seen in books, vs. about 40 on rectangular devices, BlackBerry said.
