Aereo still alive; Supreme Court ruling gave it two lifelines

The U.S. Supreme Court decision last month against Aereo apparently wasn’t the slam dunk that television broadcasters first thought. The high court’s ruling gave Aereo a few options for how it could continue operating legally. Aereo shut down its service, which streamed free, over-the-air TV to subscribers via the Internet, after the June 25 decision to evaluate its options. Aereo delivered live and time-shifted programming from Internet cloud-based DVRs and antennas. It is backed by IAC (IACI), which is run by media mogul Barry Diller. In a 6-3 decision, the justices ruled that Aereo’s business was no different from that of a cable TV provider, despite differences in technology. The court said Aereo infringed on the rights of copyright holders with its service because it did not get retransmission consent from the broadcast networks and pay for the content.
