Personal computer sales have gone from bad to worse. Market research firm IDC on Monday lowered its forecast for PC shipments this year and offered a dour outlook for the next few years. IDC now expects worldwide PC shipments for 2013 to fall by 10.1% to 314 million units, below its previous prediction for a 9.7% decline. IDC sees PC shipments declining 3.8% in 2014. Even emerging markets, a primary growth engine for the PC market, are projected to see a decline in PC shipments next year. PC shipments should stabilize just above 300 million units a year, IDC says. It projects PC shipments of 305 million units in 2017. This year, commercial PC shipments will fall 5% over 2012, and consumer PC shipments will tumble 15%, IDC says.
